Missionary Class of 2020
We recently caught up with Gabi Beach, a former missionary from our 2020 class, to hear how her experiences at Christ in the City are shaping her vocation. Gabi married Andrew, in December 2022, and they welcomed their first baby girl, Annie, about six months ago. She currently works at St. Raphael Counseling as a school counselor.
Love Until It Hurts: A Guiding Principle
“Christ in the City prepares you for vocation like nothing else,” said Gabi. “It was at Christ in the City that I first heard Mother Teresa’s quote, “Love until it hurts”. I learned as a missionary the importance of living out this quote in daily tasks out of love for my fellow community members. Now, this quote has taken on a completely new meaning as a wife and mother. I think of this quote when I change a dirty diaper, comfort my crying baby, or wake up totally sleep deprived. It was at Christ in the City that my heart was formed to act out of selflessness and love for those that God has entrusted to me.”
A Creative Approach to Cooking
Additionally, Christ in the City’s emphasis on a simple life has had a tangible impact on her daily routines. “Christ in the City taught me the goodness and joy that comes from living a simple life, and that we don’t need to spend money to live a full life,” shared Gabi. “One small daily “skill” that I brought with me from Christ in the City is figuring out how to cook a creative, delicious meal for my family based on what we already have, even if the ingredients seem minimal and totally random. Every time I do this, my husband and I always comment on how those are the tastiest meals!”
Creating a Loving Home Environment
Beyond these practical skills, Christ in the City also instilled in Gabi a deep sense of purpose and a commitment to serving others. The lessons she learned as a missionary have guided her through the challenges and joys of parenthood and inspired in her a life of love, service, and simplicity.
