What brought you to Christ in the City?
After hearing glowing reviews from my roommate (thank you, Grace!) I signed up for our college mission trip to Christ in the City. Over those seven days, I met people on the streets who had memorized the entire book of Psalms in their free time, who could freestyle rap about literally any topic, and people who saw beyond appearances, full of the ache of loneliness. And yet, their faith was often much greater than mine. I saw these same people delight over a sandwich served to them in a styrofoam box at a park, sleep in the freezing cold without complaining, and look me right in the eye when talking to me. It was in their humble eyes that I experienced seeing Jesus and His thirst for the love of each of us. Every conversation, street walk, and night prayer in the chapel won over my heart as I saw the body of Christ come alive in the missionaries! I realized how much we need the presence of others in our lives, in a culture that is full of ‘connection’ but often leaves people isolated. I can’t address all the material needs of the homeless, but CIC has shown me that our presence is enough for each other, like Jesus in the Eucharist. Thanks to my roommate, one could say it was openness to Grace that brought me here.
What are you looking forward to?
Life with the other missionaries and learning to see beyond appearances.
A little bit about me…
I love St. Teresa of Avila and she inspires me daily! I came to know Christ largely through her and my friendships, especially at Benedictine College, where I spent the past four beautiful years studying theology and art. I am the sixth of seven siblings, who are the source of so much joy and many entertaining stories! In my free time, I love baking, painting literally anyone’s portrait, hearing live music, basking in the sun (no matter how hot it is), and humbly attempting pickleball.
