Jesus’ invitation to encounter and serve the poor is extended to all. Christ in the City offers opportunities to the greater Church, to know, love, and serve others alongside our full time missionaries. Join us in building authentic friendships with the most isolated and lonely in our city through conversations, consistent presence, and prayer.

Nursing homes not only support the elderly, but often become the permanent residence of those stricken with illness, injury, or addiction. These conditions may coincide with deteriorating familial bonds, leaving one to face such challenges alone. Accompany residents and remind them of their value before God.

The hospital brings together very different people from all walks of life, and yet, they share a common experience – a crisis of health. Suffering can be isolating when carried alone, especially over the long term. We offer our consistent presence to patients who are in some of their greatest moments of need for human connection, hope, and love.

An inmate’s time in jail can be a pivotal experience – it may sow bitterness and depression, or it can lead to transformation and reconciliation. Volunteers seek to remind inmates of their dignity by offering them an experience of prayerful community and reflection. Our sessions focus on offering meditations in Scripture, facilitating discussion, and leading inmates in prayer. These efforts serve one purpose: to cultivate relationships with God, self, and others.

When facing all the challenges that come with homelessness, sometimes a woman’s best option is to take residence in an emergency shelter. Sharing a building with tens or hundreds of others can be an exhausting and dehumanizing experience. Our goal is to know, love, and serve the women at these shelters by offering fun group activities, a consistent presence, and meaningful conversations.

Ministry volunteers must be 18+ but we would love to hear from you regardless!
Although Christ in the City is mostly known for its dedication to the homeless, our mission goes beyond the streets. The poverty of loneliness and isolation exists in jails, nursing homes, hospitals, and homeless shelters. These facilities offer the same opportunity for a relational-based ministry that Christ in the City provides for its full-time missionaries, but the ministries occur in settings and times that are more conducive for lay Christians.
Any adult (18+) is welcome to get involved. While the ministries are open to all, Christ in the City is a Catholic Christian organization, and volunteers should expect to integrate appropriately into Christ in the City’s community and approach.
These ministries are all about building relationships, which takes time and consistency. A commitment of twice per month is the minimum requirement. Generally, volunteers are asked to stay involved for 4 to 9 months depending on the ministry.
We send volunteers to facilities in Denver, Englewood, Golden, and will continue to expand to others. Fill out the Interest Form to receive specific details about available opportunities.
Yes, all volunteers will receive training from Christ in the City on our approach, what to expect, communication details, logistics, safety, etc. Additionally, some facilities will require an onsite orientation.
