My name’s Mary and I’m a 1st year Christ in the City missionary from Wilmington, DE

What brought you to Christ in the City?

Our mission in life is to know God, love Him, and serve Him. I desire to encounter God in my daily life and for many years have been trying to understand His will for me. I moved into different career paths but yearned for something more. I first learned about Christ in the City a few years ago when my sister’s friend was fundraising for her mission. Since then I have encountered more and more homeless in my hometown and my thoughts would often return to CIC. Last summer I met a homeless man named Roger on the highway median. It was such an inspiring encounter and when I looked at his face he reminded me of Jesus. Suddenly, words and messages I had heard my entire life became abundantly clear. In Matthew’s gospel Jesus tells us to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, care for the ill, and visit the imprisoned. After speaking with Roger I spent the entire afternoon reading about Christ in the City and felt an overwhelming sense of peace as I applied to be a first year missionary. I heard a priest once say, “God is always present among the last, the lowest, the least, the forgotten, and the vulnerable. If you want to know the presence of God, seek out the poor and the suffering. There you will find the presence of God in ways you could not otherwise imagine.” Christ in the City offers an amazing opportunity to do just that!

What are you looking forward to?

I am looking forward to meeting and working with other Catholic young adults, serving the community, and encountering the Lord and entering a deeper relationship with Him.

A bit about me

I come from a devout Catholic family from Delaware and have two older brothers and two younger sisters. I graduated college in 2015 with a BA in Business Administration with a Concentration in Management and worked in corporate for over six years before joining Christ in the City. Some of my interests include theology, American movies and literature, electric bass guitar, natural history and biology, and quilting. I love to explore outside and keep a close eye out for any critters.

everyone deserves
to be known & loved

If you join me in the mission as a monthly supporter, you will also become part of Known & Loved, Christ in the City’s monthly giving community! We are so grateful for our monthly supporters and their consistent generosity which makes it possible for us missionaries to be formed and reach out the homeless all year-long.

Watch Zach’s testimony below to hear what it means to him to be Known & Loved.
