My name’s Maria and I’m a 1st-year Christ in the City missionary, returning for a 2nd year, from Salt Lake City, UT.
I am from Utah, where I grew up with my four brothers and attended the University of Utah. I love stargazing, history, music, travel, reading and photography.
I have grown in knowledge of myself. I am coming to understand the things that fulfill my heart, and my gifts. I am also able to see myself a bit more clearly with eyes of mercy. It is often easier for me to extend mercy than receive it, and the Lord has continued a process of healing through mercy this year.
I have learned about the importance of gentleness. Gentleness is not submissiveness, rather it allows a freedom for oneself and others to unfold. Being a secure place for my friends on the street and community members has helped me also to be merciful to myself, and to learn more about what mercy really means.
There are so many! I love intentional time with my friends on the streets and in community. One of the highlights was having a friend on the street tell my team that we saved his life. In addition to the deeper moments, I love the times of being free to celebrate. Whenever the song Rattlin’ Bog is played, all of us missionaries drop what we are doing to sing and dance. I have even ran in from another room to join.
