HELEN

My name’s Helen and I’m a 2nd-year Christ in the City missionary from Harrisonburg, VA.

What brought me to Christ in the City

As I thought and prayed about my future after college, only one thing was clear to me, and that was a desire to serve our Lord and His Church. There were so many exciting possibilities and job opportunities, and a million different things I wanted to do, but none of them tugged at my heart like a year of mission; a year of being entirely His, and devoting my life to knowing, loving, and serving the poor. I had no idea what that would look like, but I somehow happened upon CIC through friends, filled out the application, and found myself in Denver a few months later for a visit. The missionaries were awesome, Colorado seemed fun, and the time I got to spend with people living on the streets was a beautiful gift… so I signed up for a year of service!

How has Christ in the City helped you grow?

Christ in the City has been a place of freedom for me to be poor. Instead of wanting to be perfectly put together, CIC has helped me to have peace and joy sitting before the Father empty-handed, with nothing to offer but myself.

A bit about me

I’m from Northern Virginia right outside of DC and went to school at James Madison University in the Shenandoah Valley (Go Dukes). I studied Political Science and Public Policy & Administration, but what I love most is political philosophy! My dad is from the Netherlands, so naturally playing soccer is my favorite pastime, but I also love reading, swimming, sunsets, and playing Mario Kart. I can’t wait to join the CIC family!

SUPPORT Helen

everyone deserves
to be known & loved

If you join me in the mission as a monthly supporter, you will also become part of Known & Loved, Christ in the City’s monthly giving community! We are so grateful for our monthly supporters and their consistent generosity which makes it possible for us missionaries to be formed and reach out the homeless all year-long.
